In Victorian times, macrame was extremely popular as a lacework, and was used for adornments on everything from sleeves to underclothing, curtains and jewelry. During the 1970’s it made another comeback, taking the form of jute plant hangers and macrame owl wall hangers.
Macrame has become popular once again, and today is seen in the form of macrame jewelry, clothing and accessories. Beginners and seasoned pros alike will find this blog to be a great source of knowledge and inspiration for patterns and new ideas. If you are just learning how to macrame or you’ve been at it for years, you will find lots of great information. This blog is dedicated to all things macrame. Thanks for stopping by, and happy knotting!

For macrame beginners who may have stumbled upon this blog by chance, welcome! I am writing this post in honor of your courage to delve into the world of knotting despite its lack of popularity. Only a small population around the world still practice macrame. Most of these people are older and mature, and may have learned Macrame during its heyday in the seventies. Now the art of knotting may be coming back because of the macrame jewelry that has been making the rounds in fashion. The same decorative macrame is seen in fashionable dresses, handbags, hats and belts in Macrame
Like Helen, I too am glad I found this site. As a disabled veteran, who has developed some hand tremors, I can no longer do hobbies that require fine motor skills such as building models (for example). I did a simple macrame plant hanger from a kit and found that Macrame is the perfect past time for people like me. I am looking forward to learning more and doing other projects.
Hi CJ, that is wonderful to hear! I think that sa our lives change, we just need to change with it. Send in some photos of your completed work, and check back often for more patterns!
Hi there, I was so happy to find your site. I did macrame years ago and have recently thought about picking it up again as I enjoyed it so much and was now wanting to teach my grandaughter the craft. Of course I have thrown out all my pattern books, so thank god for the web. I was wondering if you have a simple wall hanging pattern?? I have found a simple pot plant hanger which I am going to start as soon as I can find some materials. So I am now on my search for good cord etc. Cheers Helen
Cute owls! Macrame is on my list of crafts to try …
This is really fascinating! I knew that there are certain types of knots that are used to tie things together but had no idea how the knots can be used to create amazing crafts!
Did Macrame years ago…picked it up again and having a great time…love doing Cavendoli…took a bit of time to remember all of the knots…It’s something I can take on the road as we travel 6 months of the year…Did enjoy reading the history….Linda
Have not practiced in over 28 years hope I can remember how to knot.
Perhaps when you read about patterns and how-to articles, you will remember. I promise to keep the blog posts interesting and fun! Keep on reading!
