I recently came across this absolutely stunning collection of macrame pieces created by Australian designer Sarah Parkes & her team at Smalltown, a group of artisans located in Melbourne. This local groups is dedicated to preserving the art of macrame, and their interpretations are truly works of art. The collection includes macrame lampshades, plant hangers, wall hangings and macrame jewelry. Some of the commissioned works include event decor, store entrance design and custom ceiling hangings for a restaurant. The images of her work are just incredible, I love seeing how others interpret the art of macrame.
This stunning piece is called the Knotted Egg Lamp, and it’s got a very contemporary yet casual feel to it. The black rope casts interesting shadows onto the wall, which adds further interest.
I really like the way this plant hanger is displayed. Rather than starting with a knot and the cords coming down form the center of the knot, this plant hanger us suspended on a pole with a flat panel, which gives this gorgeous piece a very fresh look on an old favorite.
I’m not sure what it is about this plant hanger, perhaps its the black cord that is used? This piece is another winner. You can see more of Smalltown’s incredible work at their website Smalltown. Pieces are available in custom colors, and they also offer commisioned works for special projects. Go check out their website to see more inspiring works of macrame art.
